"El Cocuy" National Natural Park is located between Boyacá and Arauca departments. Travel Advices in NNP Cocuy
ITINERARY
Day 0 - Bus Overnight
- Departure at 6:30 p.m from Salitre Bus terminal in Bogota. You should be there 30 minutes before in the bus counter to present the service voucher. Overnight on the bus, this journey has an approximate duration of 8 to 10 hours. At the arrival in Cocuy town main square, you will be received by the tour guide. During this journey, will be passed from 2.600 to 3.200 meters, this road presents loft of curves and is highly recommended to take some pills for dizziness.
Day 1 - Lagunas del Paramo walk and Cabin overnight
- 6:30 a.m Reception in Cocuy Town by our tour guide, who will take you to have breakfast in a hotel in the town and equipment check. Then, register in the National Park Office and assistance to the mandatory environmental talk to receive recommendations about the park conservation and security practices. Once is ready, transfer in a jeep to the lodging cabin, which is located outside the national park.
- Arrival at the cabin to arrange accommodation in your room and lunch in the cabin.
- Begin the walk "Lagunas del Paramo" during approximately 3 hours to acclimatize your body to the altitude and enjoy the landscape. Snack during the walk.
- 5:30 p.m Return to the cabin, dinner and time to rest and recover for the next day trekking. Enjoy the beautiful clear sky at night if there are fewer clouds.
Day 2 - 5.000 meters mountain trekking and cabin overnight
- 7:00 a.m. Breakfast and enlistment of trekking elements, then receive the security instructions to reach the goal of snow edge. This trekking is divided into two parts. In the first parts, a jeep transfer and a 3 hours mountain climbing and after 2 hours descending, through a wonderful scenery of valleys, sediments of sand and wetlands. Once the snow edge is achieved, you will have time to delight with the natural spectacle. Lunchtime.
- 4:00 p.m. Return to the cabin, time for body recover and dinner.
Day 3 - Cocuy town and return to Bogota
- 7:00 a.m. Breakfast and check out. Transfer by jeep to Cocuy town and make a tour around its cobbled streets.
- Arrival to hot springs and lunchtime.
- The tour guide will take you to the meeting point to take the bus back to Bogota. Departures available at 6:00 p.m. or 7:00 p.m. End of the tour, satisfied to experience one of the most beautiful natural parks of Colombia and South America.

HEALTH
- It is recommendable to use sunblock cream all day
- It is essential to drink enough water continually, as the humidity is very high. Preferably bring your drinking bottle.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS
- Follow the instructions of the functionaries of the natural parks, guides and people that bring you the tourism services. Respect the rules of historical and religious places.
- Take your garbage with you, do not throw it in the mountains or rivers. Carry it in garbage bags until you deposit in an adequate place for its treatment.
- Save Water! Take short showers.
- Take care of the fauna and flora when you practice ecotourism, abstain from touching different species of animals and plants because are very fragile.
- Do not buy animals and reject the places where exotic animals are exposed in captivity.
- At your registration into the NNP COCUY, you should attend an environmental talk to share you about good practices inside the national park.
- Buy local crafts and souvenirs, pay a fair price, in that way you can help to support local artist and vulnerable communities.
- Do not scratch or damage "frailejones."
- Horse-riding inside the park is forbidden and has penalties of 5 monthly Colombian salaries.
- Bring cash of low denomination. There is only one cash machine in Cocuy Town.
Cultural heritage
The NNP Cocuy is home to six guards who are part of the ancestral territory of the UWA ethnicity. Also, farmers are living on the top of the mountains. When you meet them on the walks, greet them and remember that you are visiting their home.

NATIONAL NATURAL PARK COCUY
In located in the eastern branch of the Colombian Andes, it is the Sierra Nevada de Güicán, El Cocuy and Chita. More than twenty permanent snow-capped peaks in two ranges of about 25 kilometers long and 4 meters wide. Much of this beautiful and imposing Sierra Nevada, which is the most significant glacial mass of Colombia.
